 In Bulgaria a legend is told that blacksmithing first appeared from the crafts and it was god's gift to people. God gave people the fire and only the strongest to strike iron. Many years ago there was no settlement in which any blacksmith lived and worked. He made all tools of iron necessary for farming and other crafts, house building and various objects used in private homes including, candlesticks, utensils for the fire place even padlocks. People believed in magical power, which is said to have been hidden in the blacksmithing craft and all which has passed through the forging iron with fire and hammer. 

  By tradition on weddings a special invitation was extended to blacksmiths families to  present the newly-married couple with utensils for the fireplace including, log holders and tongs.  Until now the utensils for the hearth are some of the most beautiful works of blacksmith art.
